Previously known as The Alley restaurant, I had completed an extensive renovation, and re-design of the space in 2019. With the success of the upstairs restaurant, Braai House, the owners wanted to create an extension of the same South African theme, but in a more casual bar setting.I drew inspiration from certain colours and motifs that were used upstairs, such as dark moody greens, and the presence of foliage and fire. We also added more banquette seating, which was then upholstered in a beautiful burgundy/plum faux leather. New lighting fixtures, floor to ceiling open shelving, and framed tropical prints were the perfect finishing touches to the space.
The biggest challenge with this project was that it had to be completed in 3 weeks in order to be open before the holidays. I had to come up with a look, and concept that was both connected to the upstairs Braai House, while also maintaining its own unique identity. The existing restaurant was designed, and inspired by Art Deco colours, and architecture, which did not fit the natural elements, and new colour palette of the soon to be Braai Bar. Because there were both time, and budget limitations, re-doing the bar (which is a main focal point of the space), and the flooring was not feasible. Instead, I prioritized choosing finishes, colour, and lighting that would compliment the bar.
